Happy Hour Review: Soho Sushi

Writer: Khrystal JacksonKhrystal Jackson

Did you know there's a sushi restaurant in Grand Rapids that has 1/2 off Sushi Rolls pretty much every day of the week?

5 years ago I was new to the city, and didn't know much about anything. Moving to a new city is fun, but it involves a lot of listening and adapting. Someone happened to tell me about this happy hour special and I have been eating there consistently ever since.

Atmosphere Rating

I really dig the atmosphere of this place. The decor matches the food, and it has an authentic Japanese feel. I haven't been to Japan, but I can confidently say that the restaurant doesn't feel Americanized.

This place never disappoints me. The food is always good and the prices are very reasonable. Especially during Happy Hour!

The restaurant used to be XO Cuisine, but the new owners took over about a year ago, made improvements to the restaurant, and changed the name to Soho Sushi. The new owners have obtained a liquor license. That gives patrons the option to purchase an alcoholic beverages while grabbing a bite to eat, which is pretty cool. The bar area is one of the new additions. It's classy, but still has that bar feel to it. The barstools are comfortable and they have a couple televisions mounted for the sports fans. Overall, I rate the atmosphere/environment an 8.

Food Rating

I ordered Crab Rangoon as my appetizer because I'm addicted to fried cheese.... They taste so good with the sweet and sour sauce. I have never had a bad batch of Crab Rangoon from this place.

As far as sushi goes, I ordered a Spicy Crabmeat and a Fantastic Roll. I have a love for the Spicy Crabmeat roll so I buy it every time I go. It's tasty, simple, and cheap. I always make sure to switch it up with my second roll though, to ensure that I try new things on the menu. The Fanstastic roll has salmon tempura along with some other goodies on the inside, and some spicy crabmeat on top. It was very good. I really enjoy the texture that the cucumber gave it. I love cucumber in sushi rolls, the crunch that cucumber provides can make any sushi roll more enjoyable, in my opinion.

All in all, my experience at Soho Sushi has been nothing but positive. I haven't had unsatisfying food there and I always leave feeling full without having to break the bank. It's the perfect place for a weeknight date. If you haven't been to Soho Sushi you are missing out! Make sure to stop by for Happy Hour sometime soon, you won't be disappointed!
