Happy Hour Review: Grand Rapids Brewing Company

Writer: Khrystal JacksonKhrystal Jackson

I'm sure that everyone in Grand Rapids has made a visit to Grand Rapids Brewing Company. BUT, do you know that they have 1/2 off appetizers for Happy Hour? They're delicious!

First, let's start this off by looking at a video! Check out our Instagram! It has the entire visit documented on my profile via Highlighted Stories. (Best done on mobile)

You might as well follow me while you are there! There will be more food blogs on Instagram Stories in the future.

I started out my experience by getting a beer to drink. I had the sour ale, which was a lot darker than I expected, but extremely tasty. The sour ale is the perfect drink for someone who wants a drink that is as bitter as beer, but also sweet. It was the perfect mix for someone like me and I can't forget to mention that it was 1/2 off as well.

Some restaurants don't have Happy Hour specials on the weekend, but Grand Rapids Brewing Company is one of the places that do.

They even have 2 types off deals going on that day. Click here to check out the Happy Hour for Grand Rapids Brewing Company.

Quick Highlight Video

My bill came out to $10 and some change. With a total of $13 (tip included) I was able to get BBQ Chicken Wings, Fried Green Beans, and a Loaf of Bread with Beer Cheese. (My friend was nice enough to buy my beer, but I believe that was only $3)

I left feeling full, which is always a concern of mine when I eat on a Happy Hour Budget.

Chicken Wings (Ain't No Thing But Some Chicken Wings)

The chicken wings were perfect. I want all my wings to have a hefty amount of sauce on them, a hefty amount of meat, and ranch (or blue cheese) of course. But, it is also important that they don't have too much meat and sauce on them. I know, I'm picky when it comes to my description of perfect wings. But then again, you don't call them perfect for no reason... At first, I wasn't impressed with the wings, because it didn't look like they put a good serving of sauce on them. The wings were good though. They were approximately $6.50. They are a must buy when making meals out of Happy Hour Apps. They were very filling.

Fried Green Beans (Dank Beans)

To be honest, I like TGIF Fried Green Beans better because they are thicker, the batter they are fried in is airier, and they make a special sauce for them. The Fried Green Beans here, weren't bad, but they weren't good. I think that the Fried Pickles would have been a better choice. Maybe I have been spoiled by TGIF Fried Green Beans, but I definitely was disappointed that there wasn't a special sauce that was paired with the Green Beans. They just gave me ranch with it, but once again they were very inexpensive. They cost me $2.25 so for the price, I can't complain.

Bread and Beer Cheese (The Local)

I absolutely loved their version of Bread and Beer Cheese! The bread was undeniably good. I would have even eaten a loaf of bread without the cheese. I'm not sure if they made the bread in house, but it was extremely fresh and had a really nice texture to it. I think the best part of the whole experience was biting into the candied jalapenos that were in the cheese sauce. Occasionally I would pop some of the pickled onions in my mouth as well. It was amazing together. I was impressed. I could tell that they took the time to really think out this menu item. From what I remember, the taste of the cheese was good. The candied jalapenos and pickle onions just helped elevate it to the next level.

My friend, who is a vegetarian, came along on the journey with me.

I see eating as a social activity, so I always try to invite someone to come with me when I do these food reviews.

My friend ordered the Vegetarian Wrap and the Buffalo Cauliflower. I'm sure he judged me a little for gnawing on chicken wings around him, but that's okay because I judged him slightly for eating cauliflower. I don't know how vegetarians have the will-power to turn down meat. I simply couldn't do it...

Once I finished my food, I noticed that he still had the majority of his food left. I asked him why he didn't eat much, he said he didn't really like it. The Buffalo Cauliflower was raw cauliflower dunked in buffalo sauce. I believe he said that when he usually gets this dish, that it is fried. I know that the description on the menu was correct, but the dish was just disappointing. It just seemed like they didn't quite know how to come up with a healthy, vegetarian appetizer, so they just threw something together. This seems to be the norm with vegetarian dishes, that is why I always stay far away from them, but then again I don't pay much attention to vegetarian food so I could be completely wrong. My friend mentioned that he didn't like fried foods, so that obviously made the search for tasty vegetarian food even harder.

He also mentioned that he wasn't fond of the Vegetarian Wrap that he got. I believe he said it was something to do with the fact that it was made primarily with mushrooms. The wrap looked pretty disgusting, but once again, I'm not familiar with Vegetarian Culture and assumed that all vegetarian food looked like that. I mean, it was made of mushrooms, so there's only so much you can do to make it look appetizing. The presentation was nice and the fries looked good though.

All in all, if you are looking for Happy Hour Specials on a Sunday, I highly suggest you go here. The appetizers are good and very reasonably priced, plus the beer is 1/2 off. You can't really complain about that!
